Ever seen a label on a bag saying 'RFID protection' and wondered what RFID is? And does my bag need it? Read on to find out...
RFID stands for
Radio
Frequency
IDenditification
Essentially it's a wireless technology which uses electromagnetic fields to transmit data and identify tags on an object. The same technology used to microchip your beloved pet for identification is used for your payment when you tap your credit card. Since 2005 Australian Passports have also had chips with your data on them.
So why do I need RFID protection on my bag?
Because the information does not need a line of sight between scanner and tag, so thieves can utilise scanners in close proximity, like on a crowded train or in line at the airport, to steal credit card information or passport details.
Luckily we have bags, wallets and credit card and passport protective covers available. Choosing a bag with RFID protection built in is an easy way to have peace of mind, and minimise risk of spending your holiday on the phone to the bank disputing charges!
